I studied Fine Art at Wirral Met in the 1980s before continuing my studies at The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. During my time there, I also attended additional Fine Art classes locally. While most of my working life has been in industries unrelated to art, my passion for the subject has never faded. I have continuously explored various media, developing a desire to experiment with abstraction.
In addition to my visual art practice, I have studied violin making and restoration – an ongoing aspiration that has led me to build several instruments. Music is another central part of my life, and I take every opportunity to perform and record. As a multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, and poet, I find deep creative fulfilment in both sound and language.
Through my work, I seek to express the universal thirst to understand the human condition – the struggle to find meaning in existence. If we knew the ultimate truth, would it be too much to bear? Could we comprehend it? Or are we never meant to have a reason or answer at all? Should we even be analysing ourselves in such a way, or is existence simply about survival with nothing deeper to uncover? I would hope not. The spontaneous creation of art allows unconscious ideas to emerge, revealing more than words alone ever could. In a world often dominated by atheistic nihilism, I believe art serves as a powerful counterbalance, offering something miraculous and profound.
In all that we do, let us celebrate freedom, expression, and the will to grow – to become the best versions of ourselves, whatever the reasons for our conscious existence may be.
